In the mountains surrounding Zahara

We are spending three days in this wonderful White washed village which has been perched upon the mountain since Moorish times.  We are here to see the wildflowers and spent today visiting the most likely sites with naturalist Peter Jones.

What a day we have had finding, can you believe it a patch of WILD PEONIES growing under the Cork Oaks.  Peter knew just where to find them as he has been guiding here for the last 11 years.

And not only Peonies but over a dozen different wild orchids.  There are over 40 species in this basin alone.  Rock rose, large and small, white, pink and yellow.  Lavenders, the rare Ronda Cranesbill Geranium which only flowers for three weeks, Spanish Blue Bells and on and on.  PLUS hundreds of acres of coriander which is grown for the seed.  Yesterday we saw a huge paddock of what we presumed were poppies grown for their seed.  Today Peter said they were actually Opium Poppies grown for pharmaceutical properties under strict licence, except that a few years they were all stolen overnight!!!  Doubt that farmer will be getting a Poppy Growing Permit again!
