Leucadendrons – colour your garden in winter

Leucadendrons appear everywhere at this time of the year with their bright colours starting to show already.  They are particularly valuable in the garden in winter as there is little else that is in flower – not to mention colourful to pick.

Some of the best red varieties are L. ‘Safari Sunset’ (of course) which was raised in N.Z. in 1964 and without a doubt has been the most significant hybrid bred for many years.   A finer foliage red flowered variety which gives a finer look in the garden and for picking is L. salignum ‘Mrs Stanley’ or ‘Jack Harre’.  ‘Inca Gold’ is still hard to be beaten for a bright yellow.  Read More…

The gardens of Cordoba

Today is Monday here in Cordoba.  No matter where you are in Europe, Monday is never a good day to be a tourist as so many attractions close on a Monday – however Gardens don’t so we had planned to visit the Alcazar today come rain or shine – luckily it was more the latter.

Cordoba is obviously immensely old, has amazing Cathedrals, Mosques and Museums but alongside them the most memorable thing for me were the old Orange trees that studded the narrow streets and filled the gardens with their glistening leaves. Read More…

Summer Delights

One of the best things about having a fruit garden is grazing.  Early autumn grazing is about as good as life gets.  Big fat autumn raspberries and deep red juicy strawberries  mmmm.  A wander around the vege/fruit garden after work with the warm autumn sun on your back is an absolute joy.  The smell of ripeness in the air.  Warm raspberry scent.  Raspberry Aspiring is our favourite.   What’s the best cropping raspberry you’re growing?
